Handling
Hedgehogs do have spikes covering their bodies so if your a first time owner chances are getting spikes in your hands may sound a little scary. Unlike porcipines hedgehogs can not shoot the sspikes out of him/herself. Hedgehogs are fine to handle once you've had one for a while and trust eachother. The reason that is,is that hedgehogs only poof up their spikes when threatened. When they feel safe their spikes lay against their backs. When you first get a hedgehog even if you've had one before you won't have a bond with that hedgehog so to hold him/her you might want to use heavy duty gardening gloves or any heavy duty gloves that are super thick.

Food
Finding hedgehog food actaully made for hedgehogs is hard. Some pet stores sell hedgehog food but it isn't good quality. So what do you feed your pet when you can't find it food? Cat food! Yes,cat food! Cat food has everything a hedge hog needs in it! You can feed your hedgie dry cat food or a mix of dry cat food and wet cat food.

Cages
Good hedgegog cages are large rabbit cages from a pet store(not big enough for a rabbit but fine for a hedgehog) and C&C cages with high cloraplast(read about what a C&C cage is on the "Guinea Pigs" page). Hedgehogs are pretty small so make sure they can't fit through the bars.

Wheels
Hedgehogs need very large wheels so
that their backs don't bend. A popular hedgehog wheel is the Carolina Storm Wheel purchased online. Be careful when choosing a wheel,it needs to be big enough. Do not use Silent Spinner wheels from SuperPet™ because they have a small gap in them and are known for
ripping limbs off of hedgehogs causing
them bleed out and slowly and painfully
die. Do not ever use any wheels with
gaps, even though they are cheaper don't
waste your money on them. Wheels with
bars, mesh,or gaps of any kind kill your pet.
You should put a litter box under the wheel because hedgies like to go potty while running.
