HAMSTER CAGES

Hamster cages need to be bigger than you might think! A hamster may be small but that does not mean they need a small cage. Hamsters travel around six miles a night in the wild, so why would smaller be better? When picking out a hamster cage do Length X Width for the amount of square inches. A hamster cage must me 360 sq inches, per hamster if you have multiple. Keep your cage out of direct sunlight or anywhere that may be too hot or too cold.

CHOOSING A CAGE

Cages that pet stores sell are too small about 90% of the time. There are very few cages on the market that are actaully big enough. Cages from the uk like the hamster heaven cage, the alaska cage, and others are big enough. If you want to see if a cage is big enough do length X width. Also make sure your cage has bars that are no larger than 5 milimethers apart for dwarf hamsters if it has bars, and 1 cm or less apart for syrians.

BIN CAGES

Bin cages are great cheap DIY hamster cages. You can make one for around $15, have your hamster be happy and do almost no work! Any plastic tub like the one in the picture that is 105 quarts or more will work! You can cut out some sections of the cage and replace them with wire mesh for ventalation.  Google search "bin cage" and look at the images for more ideas and pictures, or click the button!

FISH TANKS

Fish tanks are great hamster cages that can be cheap when you get them used or on sale. You don't even have to measure them, because a 20 gallon long is exactaully 360 sq nches. Buying a lid is advised so you can hang toys and add extra bedding without escapes. Remember that the cage has to be 20 gallons per hamster. Getting a cage larger than a 20 gallon long is great because it gives your hamster more space and you can add in more toys, making it easier to do themed cages.

IKEA DETOLF CAGE

The ikea detolf is a DIY cage from any Ikea store. It is their detolf display cabinent without the door or shelves then flipped onto it's sides. Ikea recently changed the expedit's name to kallax. It costs around a total of $160.

HAMSTER HEAVEN CAGE

The hamster heaven cage is a pet store cage from the UK that is large enough for a hamster! It is a little bit above 360 sq inches. It comes with three levels, one is above the cage itself and must be traveled to using the tubes iot comes with. IKEA LACK CAGE

The ikea lack cage is another DIY cage from ikea. It can take more effort and time to build than the detolf. It is made from tables that are sold at ikea stores. You will need additional wire mesh, screws, and a lock, but you won't need any extra wood. The lack can come in many different colors and can look very nice once finished.
